HW 32 - Tattoos & The Presentation of the Self

Why do people sit quiet ,unmoving, in pain allowing a complete stranger to repeatedly stabbed them with sharp needles all in the sake of getting a tattoo ? It seems peer pressure, and personal expression are some of the common reasons why people have tattoos today. We have seen tattoo’s become very popular in the past decades. While many seem to still view them as rebellious and deviant, they our viewed by their admirers as a form of body art, it’s a personal expression of identity. For others, it fills a void to justify social anxiety by avoidance .Tattoo’s can be small and discreet or large and obvious, this art can be used to express individually to indicate membership in a group or to attract attentions. The desire to be part of something, to have a identity has a great influence on what a person does. Having a tattoo can be a sign that you belong to a certain group, a certain sub-culture.

Many people have tattoos in order to make a statement, a statement about their artistic nature, their beliefs, or their feelings to show their individuality. A tattoo can be a public sign to show what is important in a person's life, almost a dramatized story of where they’ve been and where they want go.

As you can see, there are many reasons why people have tattoos. A tattoo can be part of a person's “armor”. It can be a sign of fashion. It can be an expression of individuality. Tattoo’s our a presentation of ones friends or group or identity or even a mix of all three. No one can argue tattoos our permanent statement of thought, memories etched over skin.
